Idaho National Laboratory (INL) is seeking an experienced technical professional with a track record of national-level leadership success for the role of Chief Science Officer (CSO) / Chief Research Officer (CRO) of INL’s National & Homeland Security (N&HS) Science and Technology Directorate. Our team works a 9x80 schedule located out of our Idaho Falls facility with every other Friday off.
The CSO/CRO provides scientific and strategic leadership for INL’s N&HS mission and serves as a senior adviser to the Associate Laboratory Director (ALD) for N&HS. The CSO/CRO helps implement the ALD’s vision for creating and sustaining world class R&D capabilities in the Laboratory’s key national security mission areas, such as cybersecurity for industrial control systems, critical infrastructure security and resilience, nuclear nonproliferation, wireless and mission critical communications R&D, and scientific contributions to U.S. warfighters.
Responsibilities Include:
- Represents the N&HS directorate and INL as a whole in various forums and as such is expected to understand the full scope of N&HS work and ensure N&HS’s research objectives are aligned with INL’s vision, mission, and values.
- Ensures that N&HS delivers relevant and impactful research and development of the highest quality and serves as an advocate for N&HS accomplishments to advance the standing, recognition, and branding of the Laboratory.
- Proactively manages and drives N&HS’s Laboratory Directed Research & Development (LDRD) portfolio, from the development of research concepts to harvest strategies for successful research outcomes.
- Leads initiatives to increase the quality and quantity of N&HS’s publications that document the directorate’s scientific discoveries and accompanying inventions, patents, and other innovations.
- Assist N&HS's in drawing world-class researchers to INL and is expected to serve as a mentor for early and mid-career researchers, with an emphasis on career development and support.
Minimum Requirements:
- PhD in a science, engineering, or national security discipline and at least 15 years of relevant experience. Relevant experiences include R&D leadership in a U.S. Government agency, at a national-level center such as a Department of Energy national laboratory or other Federally Funded Research and Development Center, or in a university setting recognized for national-level excellence.
- Must be a U.S. citizen and have the ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level (Top Secret equivalent) security clearance as well as Sensitive Compartmented Information access.
- Experience with interfacing with the Department of Energy and other US Government agencies, universities, industry, and other external entities.
· Must be willing and able to successfully complete a polygraph examination.
· TDP: This is a testing designated position; you will be required to submit to a pre-employment drug screen and periodic drug testing throughout the term of your employment.
Job Information:
- The pay range for this position is Level 6 ($179,220 - $394,260). At Idaho National Laboratory compensation decisions are determined using factors such as education, relevant experience, and other credentials.
- TDP: This is a testing designated position; you will be required to submit to a pre-employment drug screen and periodic drug testing throughout the term of your employment.
Physical Requirements
While performing the duties of this classification, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, bend, use hands to handle materials, manipulate tools, keyboard and type, reach with hands and arms, and operate job-related equipment. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Sufficient visual acuity and hearing capacity to perform the essential functions and interact with people is required.
