Idaho National Laboratory is hiring a Project Engineer to work in our Reactor Project Engineering Department supporting the National Reactor Innovation Center (NRIC). Our team works a 4x10 schedule located out of our MFC facility with every Friday off. You will report to a senior manager.

The Reactor Project Engineering Department is looking for candidates for Reactor Project Engineer.  Reactor Project Engineers perform the lead engineer role for NRIC reactor experiments.  You will apply engineering principles for the assigned reactor experiment through analysis, design, fabrication, installation, configuration management, and operational performance support activities.  Reactor Project Engineer will provide oversight, guidance, and stewardship of a reactor experiment being designed by one of INL’s reactor developer partners.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Provide engineering guidance to support a reactor developer in bringing a reactor experiment to INL.  This includes: design, installation, operations, removal, and disposal of the reactor experiment and associated systems.
  • Evaluate the design of reactor experiments and process support systems. Ensure the designs meet all requirements and comply with the safety basis.
  • Support surveillances and audits to ensure that reactor experiments are designed and fabricated following the appropriate quality standards.
  • Monitor reactor interfaces with the nuclear facility to identify any design, construction, or operation practices that challenge safety regulations or could impact safe operations.
  • Support operating or maintenance activities of the reactor and nuclear facility to ensure efficiency and conformity to safety standards.
  • Determine optimum configuration for experiments and perform analysis to demonstrate compliance with applicable requirements and safety limits.
  • Develop, ensure adequacy of, and maintain configuration management and the technical baseline of systems associated with the assigned reactor experiment and the associated nuclear facility.
  • Ensure that the INL engineering process is followed.
  • Coordinate and successfully accomplish INL design reviews for the assigned reactor experiment.

  • Level 4: Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering, nuclear engineering, electrical engineering or directly related engineering field from an ABET- accredited institution and 9 years of relevant experience; or an ABET accredited Masters and 6 years of relevant experience; or an ABET accredited PhD and 4 years of relevant experience.
  • Level 5: Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering, nuclear engineering, electrical engineering or directly related engineering field from an ABET- accredited institution and 14 years of relevant experience; or an ABET accredited Masters and 8 years of relevant experience; or an ABET accredited PhD and 6 years of relevant experience.
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy "Q" clearance, which requires US Citizenship. 

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Advanced degree in mechanical engineering or directly related engineering field from an ABET-accredited institution.
  • Professional Engineering license.
  • A wide range of experience from an operating nuclear power plant including: design, system engineering, operations, and testing.

Job Information: 

  • The pay range for this position is: Level 4 ($111,88 - $229,284) / Level 5 ($134,124 - $275,136). At Idaho National Laboratory compensation decisions are determined using factors such as education, relevant experience, and other credentials.
  • TDP: This is a testing designated position; you will be required to submit to a pre-employment drug screen and periodic drug testing throughout the term of your employment.
  • Multi-Level: This is a multi-level posting and you will be placed at the appropriate level dependent on depth and breadth of proven experience and skills

Physical Requirements

While performing the duties of this classification, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, 
bend, and work in an office and field/laboratory environment. The job requires hand/finger dexterity to keyboard or type, 
handle materials, manipulate tools, and reach with hands and arms. The job requires operation of job-related equipment 
and driving a vehicle. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 35 pounds without assistance. Sufficient 
visual acuity and hearing capacity to perform the essential functions and interact with the public is required. Reasonable
