Idaho National Laboratory is hiring an Analytical Chemist to work in the Analytical Research Laboratories Division. Our team works a 4x10 schedule located out of our Materials and Fuels Complex with every Friday off.

INL is recognized as the lead national laboratory for DOE-NE, providing much of the nuclear research, development, and demonstration capability needed to move nuclear innovation forward to deployment. MFC hosts a unique combination of personnel, facilities and infrastructure and offers the ability to perform research and development of nuclear fuels from fuel development and fabrication through post irradiation analysis.

Responsibilities Include:

Use chemical measurements to determine the identity of chemical materials and the composition of compounds, solutions, and mixtures. This includes the development of methods and techniques for performing chemical analysis and the execution of the analytical procedures.

  • Conduct research to a) provide chemical, radiochemical, and physical measurements; b) provide non-destructive analysis measurements; and c) conduct applied research and development activities that support the research, development, and demonstration for nuclear and environmental programs.
  • Analyze and characterize pre and post-irradiated nuclear fuels and materials.
  • Conduct analytical chemistry to support nuclear forensics and burnup analyses.
  • Method development including elemental and isotopic separations.
  • Determine stable and radioisotopic content in many sample types and matrices.
  • Perform hands-on work with radioactive samples using fume hoods, gloveboxes and shielded hotcells.
  • Operate and troubleshoot laboratory equipment including mass spectrometers, HPGe detectors, and ICP-OES.
  • Develop experiments to acquire data to support scientific improvements and evaluate new research concepts supporting area(s) of specialty.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams of scientists, engineers, operations, and other technical resources.
  • Be technical liaison with other divisions with regards to analytical capabilities. May partner directly with a variety of laboratory R&D customers requesting analytical services, R&D project principal investigators, and line management.

Minimum Requirements: 

  • Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry, analytical chemistry, biochemistry, chemical engineering, biology, geology or related field from an accredited institution. Relevant experience determined by level which includes experience in academia, private industry or in nuclear.
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy "L" clearance, which requires US Citizenship.

Preferred Experience: 

  •  Advanced degree in chemistry, biochemistry, or related field from an accredited institution.

Job Information: 

  • The pay range for this position is: Level 1 - ($63,528 - $130,284) / Level 2 ($75,804 - $155,496). At Idaho National Laboratory compensation decisions are determined using factors such as education, relevant experience, and other credentials.

  • TDP: This is a testing designated position; you will be required to submit to a pre-employment drug screen and periodic drug testing throughout the term of your employment.
