Chemical Mechanical Materials Engineering Postdoctoral Researcher

Idaho National Laboratory is looking for an adept chemical, mechanical or materials engineering Postdoc with robust modeling and analysis skills, particularly in fluid flow and heat transfer processes, with a focus on multiphase flow and chemical reactions. Reporting to the project investigator, this role encompasses diverse applications such as waste treatment, nuclear and chemical reactors, advanced manufacturing, and clean energy systems. Our team works a 9x80 schedule located out of our Idaho Falls facility with every other Friday off.

Responsibilities:

  • You will develop computational models integrating interdisciplinary skills in fluid flow, heat transfer, chemistry, combustion, materials science, nuclear science, and engineering.
  • Have a deep understanding of and experience in modeling complex physical processes.
  • Successful candidates will be highly motivated individuals who collaborate with teams of experts to advance our understanding of physicochemical processes occurring in physical systems and translate that understanding into actionable ideas and solutions.

Minimum Requirements: 

  • Ph.D. in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering, or related field
  • Ph.D. requirements must be completed by commencement of appointment and within the previous 5 years
  • Fluency in the English language and excellent oral and written communication skills
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy "Q" clearance, which requires US Citizenship
  • On-site position in Idaho Falls, Idaho

Desired Qualifications:

  • Computational fluid dynamics (STAR-CCM+, Nek5000/NekRS)
  • Computational chemistry or thermodynamics (Cantera, CHEMKIN, FactSage, ThermoCalc)
  • Thermomechanical analysis using finite element modeling (preferably with Multiphysics Object-Oriented Simulation Environment software)
  • Meshing software (Cubit or equivalent) and VVUQ best practices
  • Visualization of scientific data (ParaView or similar)
  • Machine learning/artificial intelligence algorithms
  • High performance computing, scripting and batch processing
  • LINUX, Python programming
  • An established record of achievement through reports, publications, intellectual property, or presentations 

Job Information: 

  • The target salary for this position is $101,196. At Idaho National Laboratory compensation decisions are determined using factors such as education, relevant experience, and other credentials.
  • TDP: This is a testing designated position; you will be required to submit to a pre-employment drug screen and periodic drug testing throughout the term of your employment.
