High School Internship - Computer Science

INL is seeking passionate and curious high school students for summer 2025 work-based learning experiences in our high school internship program. This is a six- to eight-week, on-site, paid learning immersion experience for students who are interested in pursuing a STEM education and career pathway. These positions will report to INL's STEM Education Manager, with support from work-based learning coordinators and mentors from various disciplines and departments around the laboratory. Students will be matched with individual mentors and projects based on their previous coursework, skills, experience, content knowledge, achievements and career interests. High school internship positions are posted in a variety of broad subject areas, and applicants will be paired with individual mentors and projects within those fields. Students are encouraged to apply for positions in each of the broad subject matters that interests them. Students applying for internships in the field of Computer Science can expect to work on projects relating to designing and implementing software applications, data modeling and visualization, system performance optimization, and similar topics. This six- to eight-week, full-time immersion program begins in June. It focuses on real-world application of learning and will include:

• One week of employee orientation, onboarding, and employability skills.

• Four weeks working with mentors and hiring managers at INL facility.

• One week working on a culminating project and presentation.

Some positions may be extended, dependent on funding availability, mentor/project needs, and student agreement and availability.

  • Enrolled rising high school junior, rising high school senior, or recent high school graduates.
  • Be at least 16 years of age at the time of their internship.
  • A minimum overall 3.0 GPA
  • Possess authorization to work in the U.S.

  • Current class schedule and number of credits
  • The names and email addresses of two teachers who could provide letters of recommendation
  • Six-eight week paid internship (must be available full time for six-eight weeks)
  • Internship is not eligible for travel reimbursement 

Compensation and Benefits:

  • High School Internships ($15.38/hour - $16.41/hour)
  • Eligible interns are provided paid holiday time off.
  • Multi-Level: This is a multi-level posting and you will be placed at the appropriate level dependent on degree field and level of education.
