The purpose of this form is to express interest in INL internships. As specific internship opportunities become available, INL recruiters will use this information to notify students about applicable opportunities through the 2024/2025 intern season. To be considered for a project, an official application must be submitted directly to an internship job posting. You are encouraged to frequently visit the INL Internship Career page for additional internship opportunities.

INL offers paid internship opportunities available in a wide range of STEM and other fields for both undergraduate and graduate students. These internships will help students collaborate with experienced scientists and engineers to develop innovative solutions for meaningful, real-world projects. INL needs individuals from all academic backgrounds to support our growing organization!

Our internships are structured on an "80x20" model.

80% of time is spent working on projects and applying what you have learned in the classroom to solve real work-related challenges.

20% of time is spent participating in enrichment & professional development activities (workshops, networking, etc.)

INL hires interns year-round and on an as needed basis. Below is an approximate timeline for live postings and offers. Postings are typically open for 14 days, so we recommend students check our job board weekly for new openings.

Fall Internships

  • Postings Launch: May - July
  • Offers Are Made: June - July

Spring Internships

  • Postings Launch: October - December
  • Offers Are Made: November - December

Summer Internships

  • Postings Launch: November - May
  • Offers Are Made: Mid February - Late April

Interest Form Requirements:

  • Current Resume or CV

Minimum Requirements For An Internship:

  • Complete an application
  • Have the ability to pass a background check
  • Enrolled full time student status at an accredited college or university (undergraduate, graduate, PhD)
  • Possess a minimum overall 3.0 Grade Point Average
  • Possess authorization to work in the U.S.

INL Internships Overview:

INL is a science-based, applied engineering national laboratory dedicated to supporting the U.S. Department of Energy’s mission in nuclear energy research, science, and national defense. With more than 5,000 scientists, researchers, and support staff, the laboratory works with national and international governments, universities and industry partners to discover new science and development technologies that underpin the nation’s nuclear and renewable energy, national security, and environmental missions. INL hosts over 500 students each year to support INL’s mission.

Benefits, Wage, and Relocation:

INL internships include a nationally competitive wage. Eligible interns are provided holiday pay, and many of our internships offer travel reimbursements.

Multi-Level: This is a multi-level posting and the selected candidates will be placed at the appropriate level dependent on degree field and level of education.

Undergraduate Internships ($25.65/hour-$30.70/hour) / Masters Internships and PhD Internships Pre-Candidacy ($31.75/hour-$34.06/hour) / PhD Internships Post Candidacy ($33.75/hour-$36.06/hour)
