💼
Energy & Environment Science & Technology (Bxxx)

Is an internship focused on changing the world's energy future intriguing? If so, we might have just the opportunity you're looking for!

Reporting to the Physical Process Science and Realization group, you will work with computational and experimental scientists to perform 3D image analysis of the renewable carbon resource (RCR) materials studied at INL’s Biomass Feedstock National User Facility (BFNUF) and conduct case studies of sample materials to elucidate the influence of the material properties of interest on the functional performance of the RCR materials for biofuels and biochemicals.

  • Strong communication skills to interact with subject matter experts to understand the numerical and experimental processes and follow the existing data management systems are desired.
  • Proficient use of advanced image analysis software packages such as FIJI (ImageJ) and Dragonfly 3D World to perform image segmentation of 3D X-ray computed tomography (XCT) images and 2D scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images is desired.
  • Proficient Python programming skills are desired.
  • Proficient use of Dragonfly 3D World to perform machine learning based multi-phase image segmentation of 3D XCT and 2D SEM images and microstructural and compositional analysis of the materials of interest is a significant plus.
  • Experience of using meshing software packages to create 3D meshes of porous media domains and using computational fluid-particle dynamics (CFD) software packages to simulate flow and heat transport in porous media is a significant plus.
  • The students will keep a detailed documentation in a research manuscript manner for the work designed, performed, and summarized during the internship. Proof of strong writing skills for technical reports and scientific manuscripts is desired. Peer-reviewed journal publication of any of the areas listed above is a significant plus.
