Responsibilities
 
The Materials and Fuels Complex (MFC) at the Idaho National Laboratory (INL) is seeking a Project Hire Computer Software Engineer reporting to the MFC Computer Engineering Department Manager. The anticipated duration of the project hire position could be up to three years.  
 

INL is recognized as the lead national laboratory for DOE-NE, providing much of the nuclear research, development, and demonstration capability needed to move nuclear innovation forward to deployment. MFC hosts a unique combination of personnel, facilities and infrastructure and offers the ability to perform research and development of nuclear fuels from fuel design, development and fabrication through post irradiation analysis.   

 

The Computer Software Engineer supports MFC nuclear facilities and programs with software engineering skills to provide computer, electronic, instrumentation, control system, software, and electrical engineering support in the form of software design and development, installation and test procedure preparation, system surveillance, web application design, and equipment troubleshooting.

 

Functions

• As directed designs, codes, tests, corrects and documents large and/or complex programs and program modifications from supplied specifications using agreed standards and tools, to achieve a well-engineered result.

• As directed by the team lead, provides software development in VisualBasic, C, C++, AngularJS, C#/.Net, Perl, or Ruby/Rails programming languages to develop web applications.

• Selects and uses tools and methods to establish, clarify and communicate the user experience, users’ characteristics and tasks, and provides input by identifying the technical, organizational and physical environment in which complex products or systems will operate.

• Utilizes SQL databases in web / application development.  Maintains knowledge of database concepts, object and data modeling techniques, design principles and a detailed knowledge of database architectures, software and stored procedures related to web application development.  

• As part of a development team, proactively engages in the team's priorities and supports the MFC mission related to ongoing tasks.  Makes suggestions to influence programmatic direction with sound opinions on technical issues.

• Plans and performs cutting edge and unique tasks while providing deliverables within schedule.

• Takes part in reviews of own work and provides constructive input on colleagues’ work.

• Recommends/designs structures and tools for systems which meet business needs.

• Participates in the completion of complex application development and quality delivery adhering to NQA1 software quality controls. 


 
PR0100/200 – Bachelor of Science in Computer Science or other technical related field with 1-3 years of experience or a Master of Science Degree and 1-2 years of experience.
 
Must be a US Citizen and have the ability and willingness to obtain and maintain a DOE "L" clearance. 
 
Required Skills:
•  Experience developing in any of the following:  AngularJS, VisualBasic, C, C++, C#/.Net, Perl, or Ruby/Rails applications.
•  Experienced utilizing SQL databases in application development
•  Solid understanding of database concepts and design principles
•  Experience mentoring others and working with teams on technical tasks.
•  Ability to be a strong team player and effectively organize and provide input on tasks.
•  Ability to communicate with both business and technical audiences.
 
Preferred Skills:
•  Experience with other development languages such as HTML5, JavaScript or general web programming

Certification Exam(s): Testing designated position (TDP)
