Responsibilities
 
Idaho National Laboratory (INL) is seeking a well-qualified engineer/scientist with an advanced degree in Nuclear Engineering (or comparable discipline) to join the Experiment Analysis Department in the Nuclear Science and Technology Directorate. Specifically, you will focus on neutronics and reactor physics calculations for irradiation experiment design and operation in the Transient Reactor Test Facility (TREAT), the Advanced Test Reactor (ATR), and other nuclear research and test reactors. You should have a strong background in neutron transport and reactor kinetics with demonstrated experience using MCNP, ORIGEN, and SCALE to model the irradiation of nuclear fuels and materials under varied nuclear conditions.
 
Practical experience using nuclear safety basis knowledge and documents is highly desired. Computer programming skills and high performance computing experience is also highly desired. In general, you will apply physics and engineering theories and concepts to solve problems and perform detailed neutronics and reactor physics calculations and analyses of irradiation experiments for INL customers.
 
You will be expected to be a key participant within an interdisciplinary project team and work effectively both alone and as a team member. You must be self-motivated and willing to take direction from team members and peers. You will maintain currency in relevant engineering and scientific literature, prepare internal reports and peer-reviewed publications, and present research results at conferences and meetings.

MS degree in nuclear science/engineering/physics (or similar discipline) plus 1 year relevant experience or a PhD in nuclear science/engineering/physics (or similar discipline).
Demonstrated experience in nuclear modeling, physics, and reactor engineering analysis
Demonstrated experience using MCNP
Demonstrated experience using SCALE or ORIGEN
Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills



Preferred:
Experience with transient irradiation experiment design and analysis
Computer code benchmarking and validation experience
Working knowledge of software development
Experience working on High Performance Computer (HPC) systems
Programming capabilities using Fortran, VBA, Python, and/or C++.
 
Must be a US Citizen.  Must be able to obtain and maintain a US DOE L-clearance.
